This rate does not even acccount for cohabiting couples who also break up. Furthermore, some people remain in marriages for reasons other than love. The fact is, long, successful marriages are built on mutual dependency. It's this mutual dependency, and a realisation that each would be worse off without the other, that keeps people together through tough times. As this mutual depency fades away in our societies, it erodes marriages along with it. So, with divorce rate so high in today's world, why do we have to get married, isn't it so much better just living together?
